We operate as a small business in a small town. Fundamentally, given the nature of our business we are unable to be an organic or natural business. We are a business that uses resources that are themselves causing harm to the environment.
The vogue has become to "Carbon Balance" i.e. pay for a positive remedy which balances out the negative environmental cost of our business activities. We do not wish to pay lip service to a vogue.
At Page & Page we want to take this offset a step further. We have decided to sponsor not only a Carbon Balancing programme to offset the harmful emissions that we are responsible for, but also to adopt a remedy that will provide a positive ecological habitat.
We have set out to sponsor the creation of a new organic natural hedgerow comprising of native species. We have created the whole scheme using British Trust for Conservation Volunteers (BCTV) suggestions using wholly natural British plants. This will generate an indiginous habitat for local species of insect, plant and wildlife. This hedge is now looking quite established with an average plant height of about 1.6m
Despite difficult trading conditions we have maintained our principles and continued our support for the programme. In the second phase of our programme we have sponsored the creation of a small orchard of 12 trees of traditional native fruit tree species.
Our latest enhancement has been the planting of a further 10 Birch Trees and a further length of hedging.
We look forward to reporting on the progress of this scheme which, unlike so many carbon balancing schemes that takes place at great distances from where the harm is caused, this scheme is being undertaken in our own locality.
